Early Visual Development

Your baby's eyes month by month

Baby visual development

Why do babies respond to high contrast imagery?

Immature vision at birth

  • Newborns have blurry vision; they can only focus 8-12 inches away.

  • Their eyes are still learning to work together and interpret visual input.

Limited colour perception

At birth, babies see mostly in shades of grey.

Colour vision begins to develop around 2-3 months, but before that, they mostly detect contrast.

Boosts Visual and brain development

Looking at contrasting patterns helps:

  • Strengthen the retina and optic nerve .

  • Improve focus and eye coordination.

  • Stimulate connections in the visual cortex.
